Premier Technical Services Group Ltd (PTSG) has secured a contract to safeguard Heathrow tunnel in the event of a lightning strike.

The main tunnel at Heathrow Airport is undergoing a £103 million refurbishment. The 18-month contract involves major work on the main and cargo tunnels serving Terminals 1, 2 and 3 in order to comply with the latest European standards and also to extend the life of the tunnel for a further 60 years.

Engineers from PTSG Electrical Services Ltd will install a lightning protection system in accordance with BS EN 62305. This standard divides the structure into multiple lightning protection zones that are electrically and electromagnetically isolated from each other. This is achieved on the one hand by surge protection devices at the zone transitions, and on the other hand by using electromagnetic shielding or appropriate physical spacing.

PTSG has provided a variety of specialist services at Heathrow Airport over the last decade. Engineers from PTSG Fire Solutions Ltd are engaged in an ongoing contract managing the fire detection and alarm systems around the airport, including terminals and the main control tower building.
