PTSG returns from Barbados

Premier Technical Services Group Ltd (PTSG) has completed a project for Barbados’s sole electricity utility provider, Barbados Light and Power.

Engineers from PTSG Building access Specialists Ltd carried out repairs to a chimney for the client, which was inspected during a previous visit to the island. The international partnership between the two organisations developed several years ago when PTSG’s rope access technicians attended power generation stations on the island to carry out a variety of works, including chimney inspections, repairs, and maintenance such as cleaning and painting.

Two of the power generating plants operated by Barbados Light and Power are located in the Parish of St Michael on the south-west of the island. The third is located in Christ Church – the island’s southernmost Parish. The company is currently in the process of negotiating a direct undersea pipeline of natural gas from Trinidad and Tobago through the Eastern Caribbean Gas Pipeline.

Other international clients PTSG has worked for include:

• Bechtel – delivering a series of inspection and certification works of lightning systems at Hamad International Airport, Qatar;
• FastIraq – carrying out inspections, remedial and repair works to communications towers and satellites for the telecoms provider; and
• The Gibraltar Health Authority – designing and installing access systems for the roof of St Bernard’s Hospital

PTSG delivers specialist services at British Airways head office

Premier Technical Services Group Ltd (PTSG) has completed a project to install three large glazing panels at The Waterside building in London.

The Waterside building in Hammersmith is the international head office of British Airways. The building cost £200 million, winning the RIBA Best of British award in 1999. It accommodates around 4,000 employees. The building, which held its official opening in 1998, includes six sections backing onto a 175-metre (574 ft) glazed atrium street; each section represents a continent served by British Airways.

PTSG Building Access Specialists Ltd performs a huge variety of installations, repairs and high-level cleaning work on every kind of building. In 2019, engineers – based at the Group’s Edinburgh office – embarked on a major project to repair structural steelwork at Blackpool Tower. Their work was subsequently shortlisted in several industry awards.

In contract, they previously delivered a series of specialised cleaning works for Historic Scotland at some of the country’s most valued heritage sites. PTSG’s engineers removed lamination and vegetation from stonework, which is not only unsightly but can also lead to damp problems and cause structural damage over time.

PTSG completes huge three-year energy-from-waste project

Premier Technical Services Group Ltd (PTSG) has completed one of the largest projects it has ever undertaken in the field of lightning protection.

PTSG Electrical Services Ltd was initially contracted in December 2016 Urbaser Balfour Beatty (UBB) – partners in a joint venture to create and manage the Gloucester Energy from Waste Facility. PTSG’s engineers were given the task of installing a full lightning protection and earthing system at the new facility, which it completed at the end of 2019.

Residual waste is non-hazardous waste which cannot be recycled or reused and is therefore termed ‘residual’. The Gloucester Energy from Waste Facility, which is now operational at Javelin Park near Gloucester, significantly reduces the county’s dependence on landfill, whilst recovering value from waste in the form of electricity, recyclable metals, and aggregates.

Aside from safely dealing with residual waste, which cannot readily be recycled or composted, the facility generates the equivalent electricity to power 25,000 homes and contributes to Gloucestershire’s overall renewable energy production.

PTSG delivers the full range of lightning protection services – including the design, installation, test and maintenance of full systems for lightning protection, surge protection and specialist earthing.

PTSG contracted at Birmingham’s highest building

Premier Technical Services Group Ltd (PTSG) is currently working on a project to provide a complete lightning protection solution for 103 Colmore Row – the highest structure in Birmingham.

The new building provides 230,084 square feet of office space as well as a top floor restaurant at the centre of the city’s bustling business district. The building is 26 storeys high, offers a four-storey winter garden and has 12 lifts – including two which are dedicated to serving the top floor restaurant.

Engineers from PTSG Electrical Services Ltd are involved in a highly complex task which utilises the building’s steelwork and Halfen cladding channels to ensure a continuous lightning protection system from top to bottom, left to right, to the earthing in the basement.

PTSG is one of the UK’s most experienced providers of specialist services for tall or otherwise unique buildings. The Group’s Access & Safety division has delivered unique access solutions on many of London’s iconic new buildings including The Scalpel (designing and installing two of the world’s largest building maintenance units), The Cheesegrater and The Vase.

The Group’s Building Access Specialists deliver specialist maintenance and repair services for unique buildings ranging from industrial chimneys to flare stacks – and even Blackpool Tower.

PTSG’s rope access engineers are PFM’s cover stars

PFM magazine, the industry’s leading journal for the facilities management industry, has devoted the cover and main article of its latest issue to Premier Technical Services Group Ltd (PTSG).

The subject is industrial rope access, or abseiling. It is one of the main access techniques used by the Group’s engineers when performing specialist services on a building’s façade, such as high-level cleaning or remedial works.

PTSG has recently completed a project at Dickens Yard, a vibrant new quarter in Ealing where its engineers perform high-level cleaning and testing of fall arrest equipment on nine different residential buildings. Photographs were taken of PTSG’s specialists in action at the site for the PFM article.

As the article explains, industrial rope access offers a number advantages over scaffolding or mobile elevating work platforms (MEWPs). Rope access equipment is quick to assemble and remove, is unobtrusive and often allows buildings to operate as normal while works are carried out.

PTSG undertakes specialist services on a wide variety of buildings, from historic monuments to industrial chimney stacks and modern skyscrapers. Keeping buildings clean is not only important aesthetically but it also prevents them from falling onto disrepair.

For example, in a contract with Historic Scotland, the Group’s rope access engineers removed unsightly vegetation from the country’s outstanding castles including Edinburgh and Stirling. Vegetation can lead to damp problems and, over time, damage a building’s structural integrity. PTSG is proud to play a part in restoring and maintaining the UK’s heritage assets.

Acescott is now known as PTSG Building Access Specialists Ltd

Acescott Specialist Services Ltd, the high-level specialist services company acquired by PTSG in July 2014, has now been fully absorbed into the Group. As a result, the name and branding for Acescott will cease to be seen in any digital or printed materials. The company is now known as PTSG Building Access Specialists Ltd, with this branding appearing on all communications.

Acescott’s unique skill set opened up a new market sector for PTSG back in 2014, consolidating the Group’s ambition of offering a comprehensive range of specialist services to the construction and FM sectors from “under one roof”.

PTSG High Level Cleaning Ltd was created offering everything from commercial window cleaning to the pressure washing of cladding, façades, guttering and rooftops and graffiti and chewing gum removal. Customers’ buildings included office blocks, shopping centres, factories and hotels. PTSG gained a clear advantage in tailoring projects requiring complex access systems to clean and maintain buildings externally with minimal disturbance to the occupiers.

The following year, in June 2015, PTSG acquired Pendrich Height Services Ltd. This added another dimension to the Group’s portfolio of specialist services, with the Edinburgh-based team offering a diverse range of skills from traditional steeplejack techniques to high-tech steel fabrication. The company’s buildings portfolio is vast, ranging from historic monuments to industrial chimneys, flare stacks to modern high-rises.

The acquisition of Best Services in July 2017 further strengthened the Group’s service provision in this part of the business, with lightning protection, earthing and surge protection as well as steeplejack and rope access engineering. The company operates from four offices: Wishaw (Scotland), Manchester, Kidderminster and Witham (Essex).

The three companies form the basis of PTSG Building Access Specialists Ltd, which replaced PTSG High Level Cleaning Ltd. While Pendrich and Best Services both continue to trade under their original company name (under the PTSG banner), Acescott is now known only as PTSG Building Access Specialists Ltd.

PTSG is one of the companies recognising the benefits of BIM

Building Information Modelling (BIM) will add value to the management and operation of a building, but more needs to be done to access this value. That is the finding of a study by Verdantix, as reported in the latest issue of Facilitate magazine.

BIM is becoming integral to the design and pre-construction phases of the building life cycle, with a growing number of forward-looking organisations starting to capitalise on its benefits.

Premier Technical Services Group Ltd (PTSG) has been using BIM in the design of access solutions for a range of first-tier contractors for a number of years. It consistently helps to lower the operations control and maintenance costs, providing more precise control systems as well as delivering cost-effective services for the occupants of the buildings.

Building Information Modelling (BIM) was used by PTSG’s designers and engineers throughout the project at The Scalpel – in which PTSG created two of the world’s largest building maintenance units (BMUs). The use of BIM enabled problems to be detected and resolved quickly and easily with the use of 3-dimensional imagery. The digital modelling and information for the BMUs produced via BIM were used as part of the training process to show the client how to operate the units.

The news article in Facilitate ends by saying that a better understanding of BIM’s value and benefits throughout every stage of a building’s life cycle is needed to maximise its use for operational planning.

PTSG wins major contract with Cairn Homes

Premier Technical Services Group Ltd (PTSG) has announced a new contract with Cairn Homes to provide sprinklers for residential units at a major new development in Dublin.

Engineers from PTSG Fire Solutions Ltd will provide residential sprinklers to units in seven new accommodation blocks at Griffith Wood, situated on the outskirts of Ireland’s capital. The development comprises 385 homes contained within the seven blocks and a terrace of houses. The development also includes a large basement sub-structure formed below six of the apartment blocks.

Founded in 2015 with the vision to be the most trusted, respected and safest homebuilder in Ireland, Cairn Homes has a number of current developments within and around Dublin, from Greystones to Naas and Maynooth. The company won the Excellence in Planning award at the KPMG Irish Independent Property Industry Excellence Awards 2019.

PTSG installs residential sprinkler systems in accommodation blocks throughout the UK and Ireland. The company’s Fire Solutions division is increasingly called upon to ensure new developments are fire-safe. To date, no one has ever died in a fire with a sprinkler system in the household.

PTSG renews Nationwide fall arrest contract

Premier Technical Services Group Ltd (PTSG) has renewed its contract with Nationwide Building Society (Nationwide) once again, for the provision of specialist access and safety services.

Headquartered in Swindon, Nationwide is the largest building society in the world with over 15 million members. PTSG’s contract covers the whole of the UK, where there are around 600 branches.

The Group’s engineers will be providing the testing of fall arrest equipment at Nationwide’s various sites. Fall arrest equipment includes everything from rope access and abseil points to ladders and walkways, rail systems and Christmas decoration fixings.

PTSG Access & Safety Ltd has held the contract with Nationwide for the previous four years. It employs some of the industry’s most experienced and respected practitioners, whose skills are employed for clients in all industry sectors, including others in its financial services portfolio such as Lloyds Banking Group, Royal Bank of Scotland and Barclays.
