The Guild of Architectural Ironmongers (GUI) has renewed its call for mandatory fire door inspections and maintenance as part of Building Regulations.
The demand for competency checks on those who specify fire doors and associated door hardware came in response to the ‘Building a Safer Future’ consultation on fire safety. The proposals in the consultation build on the recommendations from Dame Judith Hackitt’s Independent Review of Building Regulations and Fire Safety.
Douglas Masterson, technical manager of the GAI, said: “Any increased emphasis on competence in industry is most welcome. Our view is that there is a clear requirement for fire-related and other complex specifications to be undertaken by qualified ironmongers, and that installations and maintenance should also be undertaken by qualified personnel or companies.”
This is a view that resonates strongly with Premier Technical Services Group Ltd. (PTSG). PTSG operates four divisions encompassing a wide range of specialist services for the FM and construction sectors. Its Fire Solutions division is the fastest growing area of business, which now offers a turnkey service following the acquisition of Trinity Fire & Security Systems in January this year.
PTSG Fire Solutions Ltd operates out of 13 UK offices, with its many experienced industry specialists designing, installing, servicing and maintaining fire prevention and suppression systems and equipment. The safety of building users is the reason behind all work undertaken, which is why no compromise is ever taken with regard to workmanship. PTSG, as a Group, now holds over 130 industry accreditations and is a RoSPA Gold Medal holder (one of a small number in the UK).
It was reported on 5th September 2019 that the UK government plans to reduce the building height for when sprinklers are required to be fitted from above 10 floors to above six floors. A consultation has begun on the tighter fire protection regime which will reduce the building height where sprinklers need to be fitted from the current 30m and above to 18m.
A new protection Board is also being set-up, with the Home Office and National Fire Chiefs Council to make sure building owners do not flout fire safety rules, as well as ensuring risks in buildings are being addressed.
The Board will act to ensure building owners keep up with latest safety advice and keep residents updated. It will also ensure that interim safety measures are in place in all buildings with unsafe aluminium composite material cladding.
Premier Technical Services Group Ltd (PTSG) operates a Fire Solution division, with offices situated throughout the UK. The design, installation, service and maintenance of sprinkler systems is one important area of its business, with engineers working for clients across a broad range of industry sectors.
Following the tragic Grenfell fire in 2017, a great many building authorities demanded sprinkler systems be fitted as standard to maximise the safety of people in the event of a fire. Education is one sector, however, that needs to do more according to some industry commentators. In April this year, the BBC reported that just 15% of new schools are fitted with sprinklers.
PTSG believes that the new government height rule change is an important measure in improving fire safety. Sprinklers are proven to assist in the control of a fire in its early stages, limiting damage and giving occupants additional time to escape, as well as reducing the risks faced by firefighters attending the incident.
Premier Technical Services Group Ltd. (PTSG) is no stranger to tough challenges, or to raising money for charity. Alan Miner, a Service Supervisor with the Group’s Fire Solutions division serving the London region, has taken part in the PureGym National Relay 2019, raising over £1,300 with his team.
Loaded with a full rucksack, Alan completed a 12-mile walk as part of his team. The PureGym National Relay 2019 set out from Aberdeen, involving more than 1,500 PureGym members who walked, ran cycled, skateboarded and scootered throughout the night to their destination of Plymouth.
The aim of the challenge was to highlight the link between mental and physical health. The target of £250,000 went to Mental Health UK, which works in Scotland, Northern Ireland, England and Wales to provide practical information, advice and support to those living with mental health problems as well as their family and carers.
This is the latest in a long line of initiatives undertaken by PTSG in aid of mental health. A number of senior staff recently completed the Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) course, which will enable them to deliver specialised mental health first-aider courses throughout the Group.

The Group has several offices in the north west, from where its teams of engineers carry out the installation and maintenance of dry risers and sprinkler systems for clients nationwide. On 1st July, three new dry riser testing engineers and one sprinkler engineer will start with PTSG, bolstering its numbers and enabling its teams to increase their capacity.
PTSG Fire Solutions Ltd. was formed in 2017, starting with the provision of dry riser installations and maintenance. The addition of further services quickly followed, and the Group now offers a fully comprehensive range of fire solutions including safe cladding installation, wet and dry-risers installation and maintenance, sprinklers and other extinguisher systems, fire alarms and emergency lighting installation and testing.
Premier Technical Services Group PLC (PTSG) has received excellent feedback from the UK’s largest not-for-profit care provider for a recent fire solutions contract in Essex.
PTSG’s dry riser maintenance divisions (UK Dry Risers Maintenance), based near Manchester, delivered the specialist fire solutions for Anchor Hanover at its Elizabeth Gardens Extra Care development – containing 65 properties for people aged 55+.
PTSG was hired via main contractor Interserve Support Services. Lucy Gooch, Estate Manager (Anchor Hanover Group, Extra Care) made the following comment about the quality of work from PTSG:
“Just to let you know that subcontractor UK Dry Risers Maintenance came (on behalf of Interserve) and completed these works yesterday and they were really very good and informative afterwards as to what they had completed. Nice to deal with such good contractors – well done UK Dry Risers Maintenance – all the way from Manchester!”
Delivering outstanding customer service is the main aim amongst PTSG’s 1,200 members of staff. It has seen the Group consistently achieve a contract renewal rate of 88% or higher since its founding year of 2007.
Premier Technical Services Group PLC (PTSG) has entered into a partnership with Churchill Retirement Living (Midlands) in support of its charity, the Churchill Foundation.
Churchill Retirement Living is well known for its charity work and in 2015, the Churchill Foundation was set up to enable the company to focus on supporting local communities as well as national charities. The three core areas are:
• The relief of disease, sickness and human suffering
• The promotion of health amongst the elderly
• The support and well-being of the young
Business partners who join the charity scheme donate 0.5% of invoices for work delivered for Churchill Retirement Living to the foundation. Since registration with the Charity Commission, the Churchill Foundation has raised over £1,000,000.
PTSG is a keen supporter of charitable causes and as the Group and its workforce continue to grow, money is raised in an increasingly diverse number of ways. Recently, teams from around the four business divisions have taken part in or signed up for ultra-endurance events. These include the Mallorca 312 – a 312-kilometre cycle event around the island’s mountains; and the London to Brighton Off-Road Bike Ride – an exhilarating 75-mile route from London to Brighton’s seafront.
Premier Technical Services Group PLC (PTSG) has recently completed the installation of a new dry riser at Tottenham Hotspur’s training facility.
The new architecturally designed Tottenham Hotspur Training Centre has been built on 77 acres and is located on Hotspur Way, Enfield. It is the home of the Club’s First Team and Academy and is recognised as one of the best in Europe. Engineers from PTSG Fire Solutions Ltd. installed 40 metres of high-level feed to serve one outlet valve.
Fire Solutions is one of the Group’s four discrete but complementary business divisions, each delivering specialist services for the construction and FM sectors. PTSG Fire Solutions Ltd. is the fastest-growing area of business for PTSG, with services and equipment in constant demand by customers up and down the country, within both the public and private sectors.

Premier Technical Services Group PLC (PTSG) has observed, with great interest, the approach to fire safety taken in the restoration of parliament and the construction of the new parts of its surrounding estate.
The chair of the sponsor board has stated that construction firms will be expected to do “everything humanly possible” to minimise fire risks. Plans unveiled this week include proposals for a redeveloped Richmond House building, which will host the House of Commons for between five and eight years while restoration work takes place.
The approach echoed a warning from House of Commons leader Andrea Leadsom that “the fire at Notre-Dame showed the potential danger of an old building in the state that our Palace of Westminster is in.”
The Notre Dame fire occurred two years after the Grenfell Tower tragedy in London. Although the two events were different in cause and effect, both highlight the need for the most stringent standards in fire prevention and suppression in buildings.
Grenfell Tower triggered a renewed call for a higher minimum standard in building fire safety and several councils in London alone responded immediately by overhauling their high-rise accommodation. PTSG Fire Solutions Ltd. continues to experience a constant demand for its sprinklers and wet and dry riser systems (installations and maintenance). Other services provided across the Group, include: Fire Detection & Life Safety Systems, Fire Detection & Alarm Systems, Public Address/Voice Alarms (PA/VA), Emergency Voice Communication Systems (EVCS), Fire Suppression, Kitchen Suppression, Portable Fire Extinguishers, CCTV, Access Control, Intruder Alarm and Door Entry Systems.
