Premier Technical Services Group Ltd (PTSG), via constituent company Pendrich Height Services (Pendrich), has completed a project to secure the roof of Balmoral Hotel in Edinburgh.

Situated on Princes Street, the main shopping thoroughfare beneath Edinburgh Castle, Balmoral Hotel has been a Category B listed building since 1994. The building’s architecture is Victorian, influenced by the traditional Scottish baronial style. For most of the 20th century it was known as the North British Hotel or the N.B.

During stormy weather, the lead covering of the clock tower had become dislodged, posing an immediate danger to pedestrians on Princes Street. Pendrich mobilised a combined team of steeplejacks and rope access engineers to make the tower safe. A bespoke platform was erected around the damaged area to encapsulate the defects and dangers. Pendrich’s lead work team removed the damaged areas and re-formed the lead sheeting back to profile to the original specifications. The combined techniques provided an immediate solution to negate the high risk; the work was carried out safely to the client’s delight.

A cost analysis of the work carried out using steeplejack and rope access techniques, compared to traditional scaffolding, showed that significant savings were delivered to the client and street closures were eliminated.
