The new British Standard BS 8490:2025 for siphonic drainage systems was published in February 2025, which is a game-changer for commercial property professionals across the UK.
With rainfall volumes 40-60% higher than historical averages, the standard now requires both primary and secondary drainage systems for systems with internal gutters. This means that if a building has only a primary system, it’s no longer compliant regardless of its capacity.
NSS, which forms a major part of PTSG Building Access Specialists Ltd, is holding a seminar for customers and colleagues. As part of the group’s upcoming CPD (Continuing Professional Development) talks, the seminar is designed to ensure everyone who is affected by the new legislation gets the information they need. This includes:
· Property Surveyors
· Health and Safety Managers
· Property Managers
· Facility Managers
· Estate Managers
· Chief Executives
How this seminar contributes to CPD requirements
NSS Group’s Head of Siphonic Drainage, Billy Gordon, has 21 years of industry expertise and sits on the Siphonic Roof Drainage Association (SRDA). He will talk through what has changed and who it affects. The seminar also covers what businesses need to do to ensure their property/properties remain compliant and avoid any disasters.
Billy explains: “This is one of the most substantial changes to drainage standards we’ve seen in years. The previous standard from 2007 suggested secondary systems only in certain circumstances, but now they’re explicitly required for all buildings with internal gutters.”
