Premier Technical Services Group Ltd (PTSG) has been contracted to provide site-wide earthing and lightning protection at a new data centre in Newport, South Wales.
US company Vantage Data Centres has secured approval permission to build a new data centre which will transform Newport from one of the United Kingdom’s leading data centres hubs into one of Europe’s leading data centre hubs.
The UK is experiencing a significant boom in data centres, with nearly 100 new facilities planned in the next five years, a rise of almost 20% to meet growing demand from Artificial Intelligence (AI) and digital services. This growth, driven by tech giants like Google and Microsoft, is concentrated in London and surrounding areas but also includes projects in Wales, Scotland, and Greater Manchester. The expansion is set to boost the UK economy but faces challenges related to the high energy and water consumption of these facilities, prompting calls for power grid reforms to ensure adequate, sustainable power supply.
In this contract, PTSG’s Lightning Protection Installations Division will install a brand-new lightning protection system to provide a high level of protection to the site and its users.
