PTSG has the privilege of working on some of the UK’s most outstanding and iconic buildings. From historic castles and monuments to cutting-edge skyscrapers, we are proud to play our part in ensuring they are safe and protected, clean and operationally efficient. One of extraordinary buildings is the Bowmore Distillery in Scotland.

PTSG was recently contracted to deliver specialist electrical services at Bowmore Distillery on the Isle of Islay. Isle of Islay is an island of the Inner Hebrides.

The distillery, which lies on the South-Eastern shore of Loch Indaal, is one of the oldest in Scotland. It is said to have been established in 1779 and is the oldest running distillery on Islay. Morrison Bowmore Distillers Ltd, a holding company owned by Beam Suntory, owns the distillery.

Bowmore Distillery

Bowmore Distillery, one of the extraordinary buildings in Scotland, sources as much barley as possible from on the island of Islay. However, because the distillery’s demand exceeds the quantities produced locally, it imports more from the mainland. The distillery retains a traditional floor malting, but this also lacks sufficient capacity. To meet the required quantity, the distillery imports more malted barley from the mainland.

The distillery has an annual capacity of two million litres, with fermentation undertaken in traditional wooden washbacks. Two wash stills and two spirit stills process the liquid.

Waste heat from the distillation process goes to heat nearby public swimming pool built in one of the distillery’s former warehouses.

Morrison Bowmore bottles all whisky produced at Bowmore Distillery and their other distilleries at a facility in Springburn, Glasgow.

In this project, engineers from PTSG Electrical Services Ltd will design, supply, install, test and commission a lightning protection system for Beam Suntory.

PTSG has previously worked for a number of other Scottish distilleries. In 2022, PTSG carried out test and inspection of the lightning protection system in place at Glenmorangie Company in Edinburgh. Same year, the Group’s engineers performed full upgrade of the lightning and surge protection system at Glenfiddich Distilleries in Moray. Also in 2022, PTSG upgraded the lightning and surge protection system at Auchentoshan Distillery in Glasgow.
